A Massive Fleet Expansion
To support this vision, Air India has placed one of the largest aircraft orders in history, securing 470 new planes from leading manufacturers, including 250 aircraft from Airbus and 220 from Boeing. The first of these new aircraft entered service in late 2023, with the majority expected to arrive from mid-2025 onwards. In the interim, Air India has already started taking delivery of 11 leased Boeing 777 and 25 Airbus A320 aircraft to accelerate its fleet and network expansion. This strategic move aims to enhance domestic and international connectivity while ensuring that more people across India have access to affordable and reliable air travel.

Building on this momentum, Air India has recently placed an additional order for 100 more aircraft, comprising 10 widebody Airbus A350s and 90 narrowbody A320 family aircraft, including A321neos. These new aircraft are in addition to the firm orders of 470 aircraft that Air India placed last year. With this expansion, the carrier now has a total of 344 new aircraft due from Airbus, having already received six A350s so far. Air India has also become the first Indian airline to operate the A350, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, on non-stop routes from Delhi to London and New York. Meanwhile, 185 out of 220 aircraft on order with Boeing are still to be delivered.
Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran emphasized the importance of this expansion, stating, "With India’s passenger growth outpacing the rest of the world, its significantly improving infrastructure, and an aspirational young population increasingly going global, we see a clear case for Air India to expand its future fleet beyond the firm orders of the 470 aircraft placed last year. These additional 100 Airbus aircraft will help to position Air India on the path to greater growth and contribute to our mission of building Air India into a world-class airline that connects India to every corner of the world."

Making Flying More Accessible
One of the key aspects of this initiative is affordability. By expanding its fleet, Air India plans to introduce competitive pricing, making air travel an attractive option for those who previously relied on trains and buses for long-distance journeys. More flights to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities will ensure that smaller towns are well-connected to major business hubs, opening up new opportunities for first-time flyers.
A Comfortable and Seamless Experience
Understanding that first-time travelers may find air travel intimidating, Air India is also focusing on customer experience. From simplified booking processes to better in-flight service and improved airport assistance, the airline is investing in making the transition from ground to air as smooth as possible. Digital initiatives and multilingual support are being rolled out to ensure every passenger feels comfortable during their journey.
The Future of Indian Aviation
With this bold expansion, Air India is not only strengthening its position in the aviation industry but also shaping the future of Indian air travel. Millions who have never set foot on an airplane will now have the opportunity to explore new destinations with ease, contributing to economic growth and tourism development across the country.
As Air India takes to the skies with its ambitious plans, the airline is setting a precedent for how the aviation sector can evolve to be more inclusive, welcoming a whole new generation of travelers to the world of flying.
